What can you do to support someone with Autism?

  1. Be patient - Patience is key.
  2. Try to understand what life for a child or adult with Autism could be like
  3. Be willing to listen
  4. Provide them with visual support (PECS, Widgit software, visual cues)
  5. Provide children with Social stories
  6. Prepare them for any change in routine in advance
  7. Create an Autism friendly environment
  8. What colours are in the surrounding? Is there any strong smells or scents, bright lights? Noise? Is there anything that can trigger a sensory overload?
  9. Find their strategies for support and liaise closely with this.
  10. Build a rapport if the child/young person is happy to do so to avoid interruptions to usual routines.
