What can you do to support someone with Autism?
- Be patient - Patience is key.
- Try to understand what life for a child or adult with Autism could be like
- Be willing to listen
- Provide them with visual support (PECS, Widgit software, visual cues)
- Provide children with Social stories
- Prepare them for any change in routine in advance
- Create an Autism friendly environment
- What colours are in the surrounding? Is there any strong smells or scents, bright lights? Noise? Is there anything that can trigger a sensory overload?
- Find their strategies for support and liaise closely with this.
- Build a rapport if the child/young person is happy to do so to avoid interruptions to usual routines.
- Do not take it personal - No child or young person with Autism intends to hurt you.
- Try to understand life from their perspective they require understanding and acceptance - just as anyone of us do.
